Every human being came to earth with gifts and talents, things that we can contribute to make our world a better place. In some way our personal benefit is tied to that of those around us, and this is where the understanding of purpose becomes so important.
God created everyone of us with a purpose; nobody came to the earth by mistake. We were known by God before the foundation of the earth and came at the right time to the right place with the right equipment according to the will of God. And, as we do what comes naturally for us, we do God’s will with joy.
A life of purpose brings satisfaction like nothing else can, and we enter into it by putting our gifts and talents to use. The better we develop them, the more valuable they become and the greater the demand there will be for them. You are uniquely shaped to fill a void that no one else can. Honest answers to the questions below may be helpful to discover or refine one’s own gifting:
1. Who am I? Who is the real you? This is not the person shaped by the opinions and perceptions of others, but the hidden person that only you know.
2. Where do I come from? Your spiritual heritage, going back to God who created you for a purpose and a plan, for where you come from is where you will return to.
3. Why am I here? Thinking of your creative purpose, the reason for your existence and the unique way you were formed and equipped. No one came to earth to survive and die, but to accomplish something, to make a contribution that will benefit at least his own generation but hopefully also the next.
4. What can I do? Taking stock of one’s natural gifts and talents, but also spiritual gifting, the enriching experience of surrendering one’s life to the Lord Jesus Christ. Look at your potential, those hidden abilities and unfulfilled vision – those things that you have to do to die empty, having fulfilled all your dreams. Someone once said that the richest piece of real estate is the local cemetery where all the unfulfilled dreams and unused talents are buried.
5. Where am I going? Where and how will I end in life; will this road that I am on take me to my life’s goal?
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10 NKJV
Life is precious, especially because it is so short. You cannot change your past, but you can plan your future and make it count.
